Alpine, our startup located in downtown Mountain View, is looking for a Head of Hardware Engineering (HHW) who is eager to take the reins for an exciting mass-market consumer healthcare product.

The HHW is responsible for planning and executing the design, engineering, prototyping, testing, and handoff to manufacturing for Alpine's product hardware. S/he is a world class manager with strong competence in strategy, team building, personnel management, program management, recruiting, communication, process development, and rapid resolution of issues. The HHW strives to make everyone in the engineering organization successful and is committed to achieving the shared goals of the company. S/he is passionate about bringing leading-edge, impactful technology to life and serves as an exemplar of the Alpine culture. The HHW reports to the CEO.

Responsibilities

Here's what you'll be doing on day one:

  • recruit, hire, develop, and retain the very best

  • cultivate a culture of intellectual honesty, innovation, and delivery

  • deliver all aspects of HW on time and on budget for a product people will love

  • shepherd HW development with prioritized program management and the right amount of process

  • identify, prioritize, and solve critical challenges in a fast-paced, startup environment

  • formulate and visually communicate long-term objectives and performance standards

  • collaborate with the executive team to set the strategy and priorities for the company

  • pursue the highest levels of product quality by ensuring engineering solutions solve real problems, continually clarifying engineering requirements, and ensuring adequate testing

Qualifications

  • professional, positive leader with demonstrated ability to build exceptionally capable teams

  • 10+ years in shipping complex electromechanical products (e.g. mechanism, embedded systems, controls, communication, sterility/disinfection), with experience taking multiple designs from concept to market

  • self-starter that exhibits ownership and a sense of urgency to achieve goals

  • organized; able to prioritize and maintain progress across multiple projects

  • known to dive into the details and not afraid to “get their hands dirty” in all aspects of development

  • exemplar for productive relationships and candor; works well up, down, and across the org

  • clear, concise, thorough communication skills; understands how to manage visually

  • attention to detail with passion and respect for craftsmanship

  • experience with design control policies, procedures, and standards required

  • strong competence managing large budgets and supplier relations/negotiations

  • MS degree in mechanical engineering, applied physics, or equivalent

  • sense of humor
